Is Obama Pandering Or Being Extremely Smart?

by Arno on July 3, 2008

The so called “left wing” blogsphere seems up in arms about Obama’s recent comments on the FISA bill, the overturn of the ban on handguns in Washington D.C. and most recently his statements about the commitment to strengthen the faith-based initiatives. I think what many people are forgetting is the fact that nothing the candidates say in the primaries is binding. Everyone is getting so caught up in his sudden change and I’m thinking to myself whether that’s really what’s going on. Of course my guess is as good as anyone’s but if I were him I think it would do it exactly like that.

Let’s face it, nothing McCain or the GOP has thrown at Obama has had as much effect as they would have liked to. Instead what has happened is that Barack has taken on issues and aligned himself with ideas that traditionally have been the Republican issues. Of course one could say he’s pandering, but maybe he’s just smart and is thinking that the he doesn’t really have much of a clear lead and he might also know that no matter what blogs say, no matter what the media says there still are a lot of people who are not going to vote for him and he’s trying to expand his reach of voters as much as possible.

I know it’s completely naive of me to think that any politician truly has our interests in mind, however i think we’re in the usual realm of complete speculation here because at the end of the day, no candidate will hand over a list of items they plan to accomplish during inaugoration and they will also not be held accountable to the promises they made on the campaign trail.

The issues he came out in favor of are issues I have huge problems with. I think our gun laws are made by companies, not people and they have companies’ interests at heart and not people’s lives. I think the dealth penalty and keeping Church and State separate are also huge issues that divide much of this country however I still think there is a reason for him doing this. Many people on the left think there is no way in hell that McCain can even win the election, however there have been several presidential races in recent history to prove us wrong. Our elections aren’t made of issues, our elections are mostly based on people voting entirely based on their emotions and impressions of the respective candidate. Needless to say that’s the worst way to pick someone to lead a country of over 280,000,000 people however that’s how this messed up country does it.

I personally think it’s time to reduce the amount of news I take in and not be distracted by all of this anymore. Realistically Obama has to do anything he can to make sure there is no doubt the democratic party wins the elections. I think people are longing for change and they just want someone to come, take over the steering wheel and make it all right so they can all back to their lives and stop paying attention again. Instead what should happen is that the American people should take this election as a clear signal that no matter who gets in office, we as American citizens have to become and remain active. It’s not enough to have a candidate that embodies the hopes and aspirations of many. Just as it was important to come out and support Barack Obama, it will be just important to stay vigilent as citizens to ensure our elected officials are doing what they said they would. If Barack Obama wins and really does a lot of things he’s mentioned lately the support for him will quickly falter and a re-election bid will be much harder than it was for George W. Bush in 2004.

My final thought is that I think everyone should hold their horses for now. I hear people calling talk shows and complaining how he’s alienating his voters and I just keep thinking - let him win, let him take over office and if he then does all the things he’s announced lately, he will surely only have a short lived time in office.
