It’s Time To Rant Again

in General Rants

Barack Obama It’s been over six months now where I’ve pretty much left my rants to a bare minimum. The main reason for this was that after years of bitching and complaining about all the things that are wrong in this country, I guess I had somewhat of a hang over from all the getting enraged. Like so many Americans I felt something was accomplished when Obama was elected, after all he’s the first Black President, that’s something to stand for isn’t it?

If you’ve followed my writings, you may know that I’m  a rather cynical person, and when it comes to our Government, or Governments in general skepticism is the best position to have. However because I felt that hanging on to old negative beliefs wouldn’t get us forward I thought why not let my doubts subside for a while and see how things play out.

Well, let me tell you that after several months of looking at how things are playing out in the political landscape I can only say that my cynicism and skeptical outlook on things surely isn’t on the decline. Au contraire mon frere, as the French would say. If I take a step back and look at this whole “Obama Thing” I have to say that it’s hard not to be cynical about the whole situation. I mean let’s look at it from this stand point: which candidate could possibly unite this country like very few have before him? Only a Black President could bring the unity and support for the government that’s needed to enforce all the “changes” that are supposedly necessary to get our country back on its feet economically. The ironic part here is of course that if you turn off the audio on your TV for a minute and stop listening to all the chit chat and just look at who’s taking which offices in this new cabinet then it’s hard not to be completely skeptical.

The old argument of “needing qualified people” in various fields again serves as the justification for bringing in the same people that have been at the helm of the financial disaster we’re in. While the government does seem to have the necessary ability to funnel billions of dollars into the financial sector, we still don’t have a health care system, and we are still wasting even more billions of dollars fighting two wars, which of course by now is a side story on TV at best.

So where are we after 6 months of the Obama Presidency? Well, there’s lot of nice talk and it certainly is a lot more pleasant to listen to Obama than it was listening to Bush but at the end of the day I don’t pay much attention to the news headlines that are being fed to the American people, I look around the world to see what’s going on and everything I see us doing as a country still completely points in the direction of disaster. Afghanistan is obviously still a huge topic for the administration as they plan on sending more troops there, our involvement in Pakistan is also worrying at best since the Drone attacks keep killing more civilians than anything else.

The bottom line is that I feel that so many people were so shocked about the government we had in place that we’re now forgetting that where a lot of things look better on the surface, the utter dismantling of the middle class by means of bankrupting it while the financial sector has companies that are looking at record bonus pays this year begs to have the question asked of what change we’re talking about here, who it applies to and mainly who’s going to have any left when it’s all said and done.
