Andrew Sullivan, Please Shut Up and Go Home

by Arno on September 20, 2008

I’m sitting here watching one of my favorite shows, Bill Maher’s “Real Time” on HBO and when I see Andrew Sullivan speak, my blood starts boiling. In case you don’t know who Andrew Sullivan is, I really had no knowledge of him prior to seeing him on the round table of Maher’s show either. What I do know is that he was on the show years ago and was for the Iraq War and somehow he thinks his changing his mind on it is some kind of sign of his greatness - it’s not.

According to wikipedia “he favors a flat tax, limited government, privatization of social security, and a strong military, and he opposes welfare state programs such as socialized medicine”. As far as I’m concerned, he’s a walking fraud. You can’t be as wrong as he was in supporting Bush and then turn around and support the other team, I’m sorry. I realize what he’s trying to say by admitting his mistakes, but I just feel he’s entirely insincere. I think he’s a turncoat that’s just calculating his moves to make sure his stupidity stays in the news and he can keep the viewership high on his website.

I’m so sick of watching Sullivan on Real Time, he has no credibility and he’s only being invited on the show simply because he’s so outrageous and controversial. My Mom was for the War too in the beginning and with her I believe it when she says she nows sees what’s going on. From a person as close to the media as Sullivan, I would expect the realization much earlier.

What really bothers me about his appearance on Real Time tonight is the fact that he keeps cutting of Naomi Klein. Andrew Sullivan hasn’t delivered anything that I would consider memorable or useful for our society. Naomi Klein wrote a book that I believe is going to go down in history as one of the most important books of the past ten years and the useless Sullivan dares to cut her off. Sullivan just keeps talking as if he was some kind of authority, where all I’m seeing is that he likes to hear himself talk.

I agree with most of what you said. Although I did think it admirable at one point that he changed his mind about the war and the Republicans, he does look like a total fool when arguing a point that Bill Maher would normally argue and doing it 10 times stronger and getting red in the face.
He definitely makes an ass out of himself when he cuts off Naomi Klein but what I thought was even worse is that he argued that deregulating the market is still the way to go, the problem is just that the Republicans did not do it correctly or responsibly.

Considering what a phony he is I won’t even give him credit for his realization that he was wrong on the war. Let’s not forget how many “conservatives” came to this same realization - mainly because they know it’s a more popular position to have politically.
