If you’ve been to this site before, you know that I rarely speak highly of Glenn Beck, an example of which can be read here. I think Glenn Beck has proven that too much attention paid to someone as unimportant as him, results in such people going over the top. I mean for the Love of God have you seen his new show “The 9/12 Project?” -- that has to be one of the most pathetic things I’ve seen on Television. All that said, I randomly happened to watch the below clip and for once, I have to agree with him.
We live in a society where most ethnic groups are separated. Our metropolitan cities such as New York and Los Angeles are great examples of this. Where we always here talk of the “melting pot”, the only thing I see sometimes is stew. Instead of national identities merging, I see them simply establishing their position in our multi cultural nation. This separation of social groups doesn’t end with the nationalities though, it continues throughout the social structure. Most Americans don’t even think there’s anything wrong with gated communities for example, but where I’m from -- that’s crazy. What country do we live in that we would want or need to gate ourselves off from others? Certainly there are security reasons, but there are also other reasons such as showing financial status to others.
I went to school mainly in Germany but I also spent one year in High school in upstate New York as a Junior and I thought it was amazing how different things were. In the United States, the most popular kids in school were mostly those with rich parents, or the guys on the football team or other groups of a certain status. In Germany, the most popular kid in school was just that -the most popular kid. It didn’t matter whether you had a new car or not, whether you plaid soccer or football -- it just mattered that you were cool. Of course the school systems between the United States and Germany are very different from each other, however having different systems doesn’t explain why so many things in the United States are dependent on your social status.
Here in South Florida, where I’ve been living for the past few years, the separation of the various social classes couldn’t be any more obvious and I believe it’s this type of separation and ultimately suppression of so many identities in this country that is at the root of the problem when it comes to school schootings and various other crimes we’ve whitnessed over the years. As Glenn Beck says in the video, there are too many individuals out there who’s fuse is about to blow, and there’s no one to blow out the flame.
