I often wake up in the morning and I think to myself, let me find something informative to read, to find out what’s going on in the world. Then I take a look at the media outlets I use, from TV to radio over to news sources on the internet. I speak German and English natively so I have the advantage of being able to read not just English speaking news sources which I consider rather valuable. When I read what other countries have to say about our current foreign policy I can’t help but think that what the United States calls “Left”, the rest of the world considers mainstream, or even “Right”.
I realize that the topic of comparing the United States to a Fascist state seems far fetched for many but let me explain where I’m coming from. It starts with journalists like Thomas Friedman from the New York Times. He enjoys the status of being their top journalists, and as far as I’m concerned very few men have failed as much as him. Thomas Friedman should be ashamed of himself, quit his job and move to Alaska so he never has an influence on this country again.
Like so many he belongs to the people that were for the war - how can anyone in their right mind be for a war I wonder. Doesn’t he know what kind of destruction and despair this brings on a country? What about all the other embedded journalists - did they give us an objective view of the war? I think not. What I see is a corporate media that is so closely tied into the government that it’s sickening. Where are the whistle blowers that came out after 9/11? They’re gone, never became the heros they were supposed to. Where are the watch dog organizations crying out on what’s happening to this country? I’ll answer that question for you: they’re right here - but nobody’s watching them. The reason nobody’s watching is because they’re too busy ‘getting by’. People are too busy buying staying ahead in life that they would have enough attention span to pay attention to what’s going on in politics currently.
What’s sad, is that what this country seems to be experiencing is something most other industrialized countries have already gone through - Fascism. Seeing that the history books clearly show what brings countries to a fascist state, you would think it’s not easy to repeat it as a society. Wrong! The people of this country somehow skipped the entire ‘the rest of the world’ chapter when it came to history and it seems very few people have an idea of what’s happening to this country.
I often talk to Republicans or hear them talk on the radio and the everlasting theme is always “the leftist liberal media” - for once could we abandon this description. There is no left in this country and the ones that are left are disregarded as tree hugging fools and hippies. I personally think that the founding fathers were lefties, at least considering what we have today. What we have today is a mix of corporate puppets mixed with a few well meaning individuals - all in all not being much more than a corporate sponsored puppet show. I heard the other day on the Randi Rhodes show that there are more than one lobbyist for every congressman in Washington. WOW is what I say. So basically every congressman is being “coached” if you will to make the right decisions when it comes to passing legislation.
I get so angry about this topic my thoughts are all over the place. Then I try to calm myself down to re-evaluate the situation and I nearly loose it again. It’s a complete mystery why People like Hannity and O’Reilly get by with their bullshit. Where I grew up these people might be on a TV channel - but nobody would listen to them because they don’t have journalistic credibility. As far as I’m concerned they’re not even journalists. But still they get airtime - and they’re stars even. People actually liken to what these propagandist have to say. When you make decisions in your personal life do you listen to what the tabloids say? Or do you apply your own measures of wisdom? I would hope that the answer to this question is that the decisions in your personal life are based on your own critical view of the worlds. That’s the same critical view I wish people applied to politics. It’s a crock, the media’s a crock and if you want to find anything critical of the government you certainly won’t find it on TV - which is what most people are glued to.
