The American Dream, or the Induced Coma

by Arno on September 21, 2008

I was born in 1972 in the North of Germany. It is located in the center of Europe and has hundreds of years of civilization on its back, as many other European countries do as well.

Germany made it through a Revolution, and two World Wars, the second of which nearly wiped the country out. The second World War was started mainly because a lunatic called Adolf Hitler managed to rise to power and was able to build a regime, which had extremely radical views of the world to say the least.

Adolf Hitler’s main view was that the Jews were responsible for what was going on in Germany and he turned the entire race into the scapegoat for everything that was wrong in the country. At first nobody took Adolf Hitler serious, he even wrote a book where he laid out exactly what he was going to do. When in 1933 the German Reichstag (like the US congress building) was set afire, things started to get scary. A dutch communist who was supposedly found inside the building was accused of the crime and arrested and the first levels of real fear entered society. Anyone that had anything to say against the regime was in fear, and more and more dissenters started to “disappear”. As we know now, communists, socialists, anarchists, and anyone else that expressed views contrary to government were taken from their homes and sent to concentration camps where most of them died eventually.

Many people ask how it could happen that an entire country was swept up by this Cult and ultimately was lead to commit the most hideous crimes and ultimately caused the Holocaust or “Shoah” as known in Hebrew.

It all happened, because people like you and me didn’t stand up earlier. People surely had doubts in the late 20’s, but they didn’t do anything. By 1930 many people were trying to get out of Germany and those who did saved their lives, millions of others died who didn’t make that choice.

Over 6,000,000 Jews were killed in Germany alone. This doesn’t include the millions that were killed in Russia and other countries at the time, but it’s a big enough number to ‘work’ with I think.

What does all this have to do with the American Dream and me waking up from it?

If you read this far, I will reward you with a response.

I realize that literally nobody’s paying attention in this country. I talk among my friends and where some people have somewhat of an understanding of History and Current Geo Political Events, as a whole this group is no different than the American population. Ethnically speaking I think we can also safely claim that the group is rather pretty diverse. We have jews, catholics, protestants, agnostics, atheists, we have black and white, we have immigrants and natives, all in all I think you can say that we’re a nice mix of cultural influences.

What we unfortunately don’t have, is enough full understanding of what Democracy is, and how it’s slowly but surely being ripped from underneath our feet. When I talk to people that come to this country and ask them for their reasons of coming here the main reoccurring theme is freedom and prosperity. The United States is surrounded by third world countries where dictators and military power rule the country which is why so many people want to live here. If you look at Latin and South America, you will see many countries that are poor, and Dictators or Military Juntas are ruling the country, with our help mind you.

We spent 40 years fighting the Cold War which turned out to be won by us merely outspending the Russians, not winning militarily. My entire life, I’ve been listening to American Politicians telling us that we are the Land of the Free, Home of the Brave. My entire life I heard that the United States is the “beacon of hope” the “house up on the hill” but here’s what’s really going on, and why the signs couldn’t be any more clear.

The reason I spent so much time with Hitler and WWII in the beginning, is because the same thing that went on in Germany, is now going on here. Unfortunately, I’ve had this feeling for years that we’re slowly but surely turning into a Fascist society. I know what many people will reply, down playing all the signs and simply brushing it off because “that can’t happen here”. This exact mindset is what turned to be Germany’s demise. When the Nazis came to take dissenters from their homes, when Millions of Jews slowly disappeared, Germans didn’t act up, in fear of not being part of the new ideology, in fear of being called unpatriotic. Sound familiar?

It’s also an illusion to think that it doesn’t matter that China owns our debt. I’ve talked with Republicans before and they will look you right in the face and say “they’d never do that”. Is that what you call protecting this country? This argument really blows my mind. In the 1980’s, Great Britain attacked the Falklands and the United States wasn’t approving at all. As it turned out, we owned a lot of their debts so guess what we did? We told them to cut the crap, get out of the conflict and go home. And guess what Great Britain did? They pulled out. China might do the same thing to us - of course they won’t sell off all American assets - they’ll just start telling us what to do! How would you like China to tell us to leave Iraq, Afghanistan and to pull all our troops from any country we’re in currently? Would you still say it doesn’t matter they own our debt? I doubt it.

Just look at the events in the past 8 years to see what I mean. In the year 2008, it’s OK to be in a War against a country that didn’t attack us, moreover we’ve been there longer than it took us to beat Nazi Germany! Nobody cares, nobody says anything. During the Republican National Convention, several independent journalists were beaten and later arrested. Again, nobody seems to care, there’s no coverage of this in the news. In any other democratic country this is called a crime and would probably cause riots in the streets, not in the United States, not in the “land of the free, home of the brave”. Who are these free people they speak of? The cops that are beating down on the journalists that are supposed to show whether democracy is still in place? Oh now I understand. In the New United States, it’s OK to have thousands of people die in Louisiana, to have dead bodies floating down the street, while the “leaders” are having a BBQ. In this New America, it’s OK to jail people for having a resin filled plant, but those who rip off literally Millions, get rewarded. In this new America, YOU! are treated like the scum of the Earth in an airport, all because we need “security”.

All of this is such a bunch of horse shit that I’m close to bashing my head against the wall because it’s so unbelievable how the crooks in office can pull this off with everyone watching.

I guess all I can do now, is sit and watch the boat capsize and then move back to Germany when it’s all lost.
