The news announcer reads off the obligatory lines of text to go with the story, man beaten by NY city cops, Police Department claims video was “out of context”. I honestly don’t care what the context is if the result ends up being this blatant disregard for basic human civility. Time and time again we see it on TV where police officers are taking their powers and taking them to the point of criminality. They call it a “rough arrest” - i call it kicking the shit out of someone.
Officers like the two seen in the video are what is contributing to the overall notion that we are living in a police state, where these “enforcers” of the law, themselves become criminals. They are nothing better than the crooks they beat, and the thing that makes me the most mad about this is the fact that these officers will most likely not have to end their careers. If I had anything to say, I would have them fired. I don’t care if the guy just robbed a bank, at the point where the suspect is obviously secured, emotions or feeling of revenge for the hassle the cops were put through is unacceptable.
The main problem here is the fact that as with so many other things in our political landscape, police officers rarely face serious consequences for their harsh actions. When the oversight that is needed to keep these types of individuals in line is left out, every time they get away with a beating like the one displayed in the video, they will feel reassured in their actions, and continue on with their personal practice of law enforcement. We pay their salaries, and they beat up our citizens. Many people say that the level of civility in a country can be judged by the way it treats its prisoners. I would extend this notion to how much power the government gives their police force to execute their own interpretation of what they think is lawful. Whether it’s the “don’t tase bro” incident, or whether we watch a police officer run over a motorcyclist that was on the run, in every instance the police force demonstrates that they have no feeling for nuance whatsoever and when i doubt, always go for the most harsh approach conceivable.
For other countries in the world, the idea that police officers would start taking personal revenge during an arrest is simply inconceivable and it devalues the credibility of the entire concept of police officers. How many more times do we have to watch citizens of this country get treated like the scum of the earth before someone steps up and demands that police officers stop treating suspects like terrorists.
