{Overview:}

In the previous decade one had the notion that motor cars had reached the highest point of its development. Driven by the looming shortage of fuel and legislation concerning cleaner exhaust gas emissions, engineers had to develop more efficient cars.

Engine efficiency has increased by leaps and bounds over the past few years. On their new models manufacturers such as VW/Audi, BMW and Mercedes quote increases in Gas Mileage of 20%, 25% and even 30% over that of their outgoing models. This is a really surprising advance they attained when everybody thought that this could no longer be possible.

By innovation in the design of new transmission systems and the redesign of existing ones, such saving became possible.

{How was this done?}

These transmission systems with better efficiency are a fairly recent development. When it came to efficiency, manual gearboxes always had the upper hand over automatic gearboxes.

Gone are the days of two speed torque convertor slush-boxes, which were hugely inefficient. Today's automatic transmissions have reached the same efficiency as manually operated systems and can come with 5, 6 even up to 8 gears.

Locking torque convertors prevent the friction and hydraulic losses inherent in that type of automatic transmission and are commonly used these days. With two or three speeds, old type automatics had the torque convertor do the job of spreading the ratios.

Double clutch gearboxes operate with normal gears just like in a manual gearbox, with the difference of having two clutches operating alternatively and being automatically engaged, were pioneered by the Germans and are extremely efficient. The gears are similar to a normal manual gearbox, but with two clutches, which open and close alternatively and not simultaneously. Volkswagen and Porsche are the major proponents of this.

The principle was known for many years but CV (constantly variable) transmissions have only lately been used more often. Functioning on the principle of expanding and contracting pulleys connected with a chain or band where the one pulley expands while the other one contracts and thus varying the ratios infinitely.

This system with rubber belts was used by DKW on its Hobby scooter in the 1950's and later by the Dutch firm of DAF for a small car and is used these days in a more sophisticated form by most manufacturers.

What irritates drivers of cars with this type of transmission is the constant flat drone of the engine while the car gathers speed. To make it sound more like a normal car the transmission is designed to change gears in defined steps, which are electronically controlled. This makes the automobile feel more like one with a normal transmission.

{The need for many gears:}

Automobiles with manual transmission with only three gears are far in the past. In bygone years cars that needed frequent gear changing were deemed to be inferior. The large engines with tractor like pulling power, together with low gearing, allowed one to change into top gear just after pulling away and leave it in top gear for the rest of the trip.

High gearing enables a vehicle to be very economical with gasoline. Thus that is the reason why modern motor cars have such a large number of gears when compared to old motor cars, as there is a wider gap to fill. Today's manual gearboxes have synchromesh on all gears and are properly designed to make gear changing more of a pleasure than a chore.

The tendency is to go for automatics where most of the driving has to be done in congested traffic where manual gearboxes are hard work.

Together with the previously mentioned lock up torque convertors, these transmissions have come to approach the efficiency of a manual transmission. Planetary gears are used in these transmissions and the gears are changed by braking certain gear sets with band clutches and releasing other sets, giving velvety and almost imperceptible gear changes.

The double clutch systems usually have paddles on the Steering Wheel, one for changing up and one for changing down, just like F1 racing cars. The changes will however also work automatically. This type of transmission rivals and even exceeds the efficiency of manual transmissions.
